The Sealyham Terrier

Sealyham is the name of a Mansion in Wales / Pembrokeshire, the estate of an enthusiastic hunter – Captain John Tucker-Edwardes. When Capt. Edwardes retired, he fully dedicated himself his great passion – the hunt on badgers and otters.

But since none of his dogs fulfilled his expectations, he decided to breed his own breed. As basis for his stock he imported white, wired haired Bassets and crossed them with Dandie Dinmonts and also Foxterriers as well as a little Bullterrier kind – the Cheshire terrier. He did a very good job, because within a very short time his kennel counted more than 100 dogs. He selected very strictly – if one of his dogs during trials did not show enough courage and duration, the dogs either were placed with friends or put to sleep. In this way Capt. Edwardes and following breeders succeeded in breeding a different hunting dog as regards exterior and character.

The “Edwardes-Terrier!” got known fast in England, and in 1911 the English Kennel Club registered the breed under the name Sealyham Terrier.

As many of other terrier breeds, also the Sealyham Terrier got ‘out of work / jobless’ and in the years to come the Sealyham Terrier developed from being a passionate hunter into a very sociable and companionable dog with a little longer fur coat. The pronounced hunting eagerness was damped considerably, why to-day he is a very happy and uncomplicated social dog. The Sealyham Terrier is a very pleasant family dog, an energy bomb outside in nature, but happy to adapt to its family’s habits and furthermore has a blessed ability to relax when one needs some rest and piece.

The Sealyham Terrier is a little solid, harmoniously built dog with powerful and lively movements, self-conscious personality and great sense of humour. Due to a very high irritation threshold, he also is very friendly to children. Therefore, it is obvious, that a dog with so much character and great personality has to be brought up not only affectionately, but in a firm and consequent way! Otherwise – as an English expert once said “you will soon discover, when your Sealyham once again has deceived you ” The voice alone is the best tool to built up a perfect companionship.

The coat of a Sealyham Terrier is a combination of dirt-repelling underwool and wired cover coat that has to be brushed once a week and groomed 3 – 4 times a year – And then your perfectly groom Sealyham Terrier will be a beautiful sight.

To-day the Sealyham Terrier is a small exclusive breed. There are proportionally few litters registered per year, why you will have to weapon yourself with patience to find the Sealyham you have been waiting for for such a long time. But it will pay !!!!
